Summer 2010 News
We hope this message finds you well, enjoying a beautiful summer in Oklahoma.
As you know, the 2010 Session of the Oklahoma Legislature has adjourned and we at OPERS are sending
out our legislative edition of the retiring RIGHT newsletter to active and retired members. The
newsletter should be hitting mailboxes just after the July 4th holiday and are available on the OPERS website
OPERS was impacted by a small number of bills that were passed and signed into law by Governor
Henry. In addition to the bills outlined in the newsletter, you should have recently received your annual
letter on contribution rates for the fiscal year ending June 30, 2011.
OPERS adopts a new look
Our communications crew has spent the last few weeks working on giving our many publications, forms
and even our website a minor facelift to help keep our communication pieces fresh and informative. You
will continue to see our old logo (the familiar red oval) in circulation for a period of time as we move
forward. However, we have updated all of our critical forms that are available on the OPERS website here, as well as
member handbooks and seminar materials with a new look and feel.
New publication – EssentialOPERS
Part of the update of our appearance was the creation of a new summary document entitled
EssentialOPERS, which was included in the newsletter to all active members for their convenience. This
one-page summary of plan provisions was created to provide an at-a-glance overview of the benefits of
plan membership and is a convenient summary for those who want to know “just the facts” about the plan.
We hope you find this new document to be a valuable tool to provide your employees. Versions of
EssentialOPERS for State & Local Government Employees, Hazardous Duty Employees, and Elected
Officials are available on the Publications page of the OPERS website here.
Member handbooks available online
We are in the process of sending new member handbooks out to you. This distribution will not include a
handbook for all of your current employees as in the past. In an effort to minimize printing costs and be
more environmentally conscious, we are changing the way we distribute handbooks to our members.
Please continue to provide a handbook to all of your new employees when you enroll them into OPERS.
However, we ask that you only provide a handbook to current employees who specifically request one,
and avoid sweeping distributions to employees who do not. EssentialOPERS should serve as a valuable
alternative to a full member handbook for members who may not require the detail the full handbook provides.
The handbook is still available to all members and employers who request it, and all versions of the
handbook are available on the Publications page of the OPERS website here.
Road Show coming this fall
Be on the lookout for an invitation to the annual retirement coordinator training seminars held around
the State in the fall. We are still in the process of developing dates, times and locations and will be in
contact with you as details are confirmed. Stay tuned!
Thank you for your continued support and valued partnership. As always, please let us know if there is
anything we can do to be of assistance to you.
