  • We Are Moving!

    The OPERS, URSJJ, SoonerSave, and Pathfinder offices are preparing to move to a new location at the Grand Centre building. Services may be limited during the week of July 23rd as we transition to our new space. We do not expect phone services to be down, but you may see an increased wait time during this period. Our first day in the new office will be July 26th, but we recommend calling our office before visiting.

    What's Your Net Worth? Fretting over your finances can be discouraging. Some people would rather not know the whole picture when it comes to how much money they have saved versus how much they owe. However, unless we can find a way to quantify our personal financial situation, we will struggle to get on a positive financial footing.   • Understanding Long-Term Care Insurance

    One important aspect of retirement planning includes understanding a new set of risks and rewards in retirement. The obvious reward is more time spent on the people and/or activities we may have put off during our hectic working years. Two of the primary risks in retirement are longevity (outliving your savings) and inflation (decreased purchasing power over time). The good news is we are living longer, which also means we must be prepared financially to protect against outliving our saving. (more)

  • Taxes and Your Retirement Benefit

    Your monthly benefit amount may change in 2018

    Your OPERS retirement benefit is considered income for tax purposes. The tax rates applied to your benefit are based on withholding tables provided by the Internal Revenue Service and the Oklahoma Tax Commission. The Oklahoma tax withholding tables will not change for 2018; however, recently signed federal legislation will change the federal tax withholding beginning with your deposit on January 31, 2018.   • Avoid Missing Important Communications from OPERS

    Keeping an accurate address on record is an important means of communicating with OPERS. Throughout the year, we mail important information to you in the form of newsletters, tax forms, etc. Since your monthly retirement benefit deposits electronically each month, it is easy to forget to update your mailing address.It is important to keep your mailing information current with other benefit providers including SoonerSave and the Employees Group Insurance Division, as well.

    The 2.5% Step-Up Program allows members to increase their retirement benefits by paying an additional member contribution each pay period. Currently, that additional contribution is 2.91% of your compensation and is subject to change.The additional Step-Up contributions are used to increase the computation factor when benefits are calculated. The standard retirement benefit calculation for most OPERS members uses a benefit computation factor of 2%. (more)

  • Tax Season is Upon Us

    Each year, OPERS sends an IRS Form 1099-R to all retired members who received benefits in the previous calendar year. The 1099-R shows the amount of federal and state tax withheld along with other possible deductions such as medical insurance premiums. (more)

  • Returning to Work After Retirement

    According to a 2016 Employee Benefit Research Institute survey, 67% of workers say they plan to work for pay after they retire. And while a smaller percentage (27%) of retirees actually reported having worked for pay since retiring, work in retirement remains an important topic to retirees.   • Anna Eldredge Receives State Charitable Campaign Award

    Anna Eldredge was recently presented with the 2016 Outstanding Employee Campaign Coordinator award. This award is presented each year by the State Charitable Campaign and the United Way of Central Oklahoma in recognition of exceptional campaign participation. Award recipients were honored at the United Way’s annual Recognition Reception in November. (more)

    Accounting and Financial Reporting for Pensions

    This information was previously posted to the OPERS website in August 2015. However, subsequent to issuance of the Schedule of Employer Allocations and Schedule of Pension Amounts by Employer (“Schedules”), management became aware of an error in the Schedules that impacted the employer allocation percentage for nine agencies. The Schedules presented here have been adjusted to correct the error.

  • The New Defined Contribution System

    A new defined contribution (DC) retirement system will become effective for those eligible members who join OPERS on or after November 1, 2015. The DC system is composed of two defined contribution plans pursuant to Sections 401(a) and 457(b) of the Internal Revenue Code.

    The creation of the DC system does not affect employees who were members of OPERS before November 1, 2015. Those members will continue to participate in the longstanding OPERS defined benefit plan.

  • 2014 SSA Earnings Limit for Retirees Returning to Work

    OPERS retirees may return to work after they retire and continue to receive their retirement benefits. However, OPERS retirees may be subject to a federal earnings limitation. The federal limitation applies only to OPERS retirees who return to work for an OPERS participating employer and are younger than full retirement age set by the Social Security Administration (SSA).   • Corresponding with OPERS in the wake of recent tornados

    The thoughts and prayers of the OPERS staff are with all of those impacted by the recent tornados throughout Central Oklahoma.The extensive damage and destruction to homes and businesses in the Carney, Luther, Shawnee, Newcastle and Moore areas, as well as the damage to the post office branch in Moore, has had implications on the ability of some of our members to receive their mail and/or correspond with OPERS (more).

  • MESSAGE ABOUT INCOME TAX WITHHOLDING FOR RETIREES IN JANUARY

    Many OPERS retirees have contacted OPERS regarding an increase in their income tax withholding on their January benefit payments. The increase in income tax withholding is the result of confusion over income tax withholding tables published by the IRS. (more)

  • Form 1099Rs and January Benefit Notices hitting your mailbox

    Each January, OPERS sends a Benefit Notice to those members who receive monthly benefits in January. We also mail a 1099-R to all members who received benefits in the previous calendar year, or any active members who took a distribution of their employee contributions after they left employment with a participating employer.   • OPERS and URSJJ Actuarial Valuations are now available

    Actuarial valuation reports for the Oklahoma Public Employees Retirement System (OPERS) and the Uniform Retirement System for Justices and Judges (URSJJ) were presented to the board of trustees at their monthly meeting on October 28. The valuations were conducted by Cavanaugh Macdonald Consulting, the firm recently engaged to provide actuarial services for the two retirement systems. Click here to view the OPERS and URSJJ actuarial valuation reports as of July 1, 2010.

  • Response to Yahoo Article on Public Pension Plans

    Message from the Executive Director: OPERS has received several calls today concerning a story that was posted on the Yahoo Finance website on Monday October 18, 2010.  It is an article that says several states "may" run out of money in the next decade or two.  The State of Oklahoma (not OPERS) is #7 on the list.  This article is based on a paper by a professor who is using questionable, if not actually false, assumptions about public pension plans.   • Susan Reed named Chief Financial Officer at OPERS

    March 31, 2010 - Long-time State Treasury staffer Susan Reed is the new Director of Finance and Chief Financial Officer for OPERS. Reed had been with the State Treasurer's office since 1991, serving as the Comptroller of that office for nearly five years. (more)

  • Message from the Executive Director: Pew report informative, but does not tell the whole story

    On Thursday, February 18, 2010, the Pew Center on the States released a report on the financial status of the public retirement systems operated by the fifty states. While there are valid reasons for concern raised by the report, most states have adequate resources set aside to pay their pension obligations. OPERS retirees should not be concerned about their pensions.   • Recent Change to Federal Tax Rules

    The federal “Stimulus Package” (formally known as the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009) was signed into law on Feb. 17, 2009. Because of the new law, the IRS has changed the federal tax withholding tables. (more)
